11/8/2023 0 Comments Rose quartz pink diamondPink found Spinel to be embarrassing, look at Pink’s facial expressions in Spinel’s song. It doesn’t help the Spinel was a reminder of Pink’s childishness. Pink’s mindset at the time was similar to the rest of the Diamond’s. I’m not trying to defend Pink/Rose, what she did was unambiguously wrong. Eventually she decided to move things on completely to give Steven life. She never was able to figure out how to take accountability for what she did wrong. She realized that her actions held consequences and developed a lot of regrets for how she handled things. This was her moment of self actualization and self expression, and it unfortunately also caused a lot of destruction for the people she cared about. It was also a teenager rebelling against over strict authoritative parents. I think Rose’s rebellion wasn’t just a cool intergalactic space war. Such as taking in and accepting Garnet’s fusion and encouraging Bismuth to make what she wanted. She did do good things, like encourage other gems to express themselves in ways that Homeworld would find unacceptable. She developed emotionally, but in a warped way. Instead they placed a burden on Pink that she was not ready for. If White, Blue, and Yellow had noticed this they could have directed her growth in another way. Her tantrums and asking for additional adult responsibilities was a misplaced request for attention. Now I know that technically Pink asked and threw tantrums to receive said colony, but Pink was a child. In this instance I believe that was expressed by Pink wanting her own colony. Instrumental parentification involves the child completing physical tasks for the family, such as looking after a sick relative, paying bills, or providing assistance to younger siblings that would normally be provided by a parent. Most victims of childhood abuse go through something called Parentification. The parental/older sister relationship with White, Blue, and Yellow eventually becomes an abusive one with Pink. However while the other Diamonds occasionally enjoyed Pink’s childishness, it becomes clear that they didn’t have the level of patience required to foster a proper emotional maturity in Pink. She had a playmate (Spinel) and would invent games for the Diamonds to play with her. She was a physical embodiment of childhood immaturity. She was not only the most diminutive physically, she was also the least emotionally mature. Pink was a figurative child to 3 much more successful mother/older sister figures. So what happens when we look at Rose/Pink’s life in a linear-ish fashion? Her character development has gone backwards. That is because we are still learning everything from Steven’s point of view. So as the story has gone on our perception of Rose/Pink has gone from very positive to “wow she’s trash!”.
